Flowers for Algernon

Daniel Keyes, the author of Flowers For Algernon, has died at the age of 86. I remember first reading this short story in a Science Fiction compilation and, even as a teenager, being overwhelmed by the emotional depth of the writing when compared to the rest of the collection. It was in a class of its own and deservedly won the Hugo Award in 1960.

It was the humanity of the story which reached me. A quality that is found in abundance in Trollope’s writing, even in his sole outing in the Sci-Fi genre (before it had even been invented), the short novel The Fixed Period.
