I spent a very enjoyable week in Germany from 16th to 20th January speaking to members of the Deutch-Britische Gesellschaft about the Life and Works of Anthony Trollope. The members of the groups in Essen, Munster and Bonn all made me very welcome. They showed me around their cities and entertained me. Of course we spent much time discussing the BREXIT issues which were very much in the news that week as Theresa May, the British Prime Minister, had just made a keynote speech describing how the UK would leave the EU. Over many lovely meals, as the alcohol flowed, we found ourselves agreeing vehemently that we were doomed, in accordance with the ancient Chinese curse, to “live in interesting times”.
