I just found this programme on the BBC iPlayer. It is a short summary of how fiction has depicted elections. The Victorian era is well represented. Dickens’ the Pickwick Papers gets a mention as does George Elliott’s Middlemarch. But Trollope also gets a mention with references to both the Palliser series and the electoral ambitions of Melmotte in The Way We Live Now as he seeks to cement his place in society. The conclusion is that the era before the secret ballot provides much greater scope for fictional drama.
