Magna Carta is 800 years old

Signed (or rather, sealed) at Runnymede on 15 June 1215 by King John, the Magna Carta enshrined many of the rights which we take for granted nowadays.  Of course, back then it didn’t confer those rights on just anybody – only the wealthy few, the most powerful barons who backed John into a corner (politically and militarily) really benefited from the original but over time the trickle down effect means that, amongst other rights, even the humblest peasant blogger benefits from the rights of habeas corpus (though technically this right originated in the Assize of Clarendon but who’s counting?).
