Authors’ incomes down

I attach an article from The Independent, spotted by Lucia Costanzo, which notes that Anthony Trollope is very lucky to have  talks by Joanna Trollope (a descendent down another part of the Trollope family tree) included in his Bicentenary Celebrations.

I think Trollope himself would  have been more interested in the subsequent article which notes that authors’ incomes are on average only £11,000 a year – down nearly 30% from their peak in 2005. I cannot imagine that Trollope – whose earnings  were of the order of £6,400 in 1869 the year he wrote Phineas Finn and He Knew He Was Right, which is the equivalent of £112,000 in today’s money, would have been impressed by this trend.
