Trollope Never Saw A Total Eclipse

Given today’s eclipse in the UK, I was surprised to learn that there were no total eclipses visible from the UK between 1724 and 1925. So Trollope would never have seen one (unless he did so by chance on one of his many foreign travels but I haven’t seen mention of it in any of his travel books if he did so). He would however have had opportunity to witness partial eclipses, the last of which in his lifetime, took place in May 1882 when he was 67.

  1. an amazing observation! I will leave for someone else to see if there was a total eclipse whilst Trollope was in Aus. It raises another issue – I don’t think I recall Trollope ever much talking about the celestial world.

  2. I don’t think even his most romantic interludes were of the lovers wishing on a star variety.
