Trollope is addictive – official

I am grateful to Glenn Shipway who spotted the following mention of Trollope in The Prime Minister and his Trollope; Reading Harold Macmillan’s Reading by Peter Catterall.

In his diary on 26 July, 1951, Macmillan wrote: “I have finished all the Barchester series, ending with Last Chronicles of Barchester (sic). This means that I have read all the clerical and all the political works again in the last few months, even weeks. This must stop. Trollope is a drug.”

My friends think it was Mr Macmillan (of blessed memory) who said you should go to bed each night with a Trollope. He was right, of course, however you read it..
