Nadine Gordimer 1923-2014

We note with sadness the death of Nadine Gordimer, prolific author and tireless campaigner for justice in South Africa, at the age of 90. She won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991 and is perhaps most widely known for her assistance to Nelson Mandela in preparing his “I am prepared to die” speech at his trial in 1962. Her politics and her writing were inextricably linked in a way that Trollope, who advocated self-determination for some of the local black population in his book South Africa, published in 1878, would have admired.
