It is good to see that Trollope’s contemporaries are well represented in the list of best loved books for children. Three of the top 10 books were written during Trollope’s lifetime: Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (No 2), Black Beauty by Anna Sewell (No 7) and Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (No 8) published the year after Trollope died.

Unsurprisingly Trollope didn’t feature but there are grounds for hope that literate children will graduate from these titles to similarly well-written books that challenge them with characters who have depth and realistic situations that pose moral questions which are not capable of simplistic resolution.
