Elections and the Postal System

Conflating two favourite subjects of Anthony Trollope, I exercised my right to vote today using a postal ballot form. I think Trollope would have preferred that the ballot should not be secret – I seem to recall him arguing against it somewhere (can anyone help me with a reference?). I am sure he would have been bemused that the election should be for members of the European Parliament.

  1. I was just reading “The Way We Live Now” and I remembered your post and how you mentioned he was against the ballot. In the back of my book, are notes and it said that in his Autobiography (pg 302), he wrote that he was against it because it was not worthy of the people, that the people should become independent enough to resist being influenced on how to vote without the secret ballot.

  2. Thanks Christina. Well spotted. I wonder whether Trollope would still think the same in this internet age?
